అది.. ఇండోనేషియాకు పశ్చిమాన ఉన్న పెద్ద దీవి. పేరు సుమిత్రా. ఈ దీవి రైన్ ఫారెస్ట్ తో నిండి ఉంటుంది. కొండలు, లోయలు ఎక్కువే. అలాంటి లోయల్లో కొంత మంది పర్యాటకులు ఓ అద్భుతం చూశారు. అదే, భూమిని చీల్చుకుని వచ్చిన పుష్పం. భూమి పై పొరలు చీలడాన్ని ముందుగా గమనించారు. వారిలో ఆసక్తి పెరిగింది. మర్నాడు మళ్ళీ వచ్చి చూశారు. చీలికలు పెరిగాయి. మెదడు ఆకారం బయటకు రావడాన్ని గమనించారు. మరుసటి నాటికి ఈ  ఆకారం మరింత పైకి లేచింది. పర్యాటకులు విస్తుపోయారు. అది మొగ్గ అని, త్వరలో వికసించబోతున్నదని తెలుసుకుని మరింతగా ఆశ్చర్యపోయారు.  ఈ మొక్క అమర్ఫోపల్లస్ ఫ్యామిలీకి చెందినది. 

ఇది ఎక్కువ కాలం భూమి లోపలే పెరుగుతుంటుంది.  భూమి లోపలే చాలా సంవత్సరాల పాటు పునరుత్పత్తి కోసం శక్తిని కూడగట్టుకుంటుంది. అనుకూల సమయం వచ్చే వరకు వేచి ఉంటుంది. ఆ టైమ్ రాగానే మొగ్గ తొడుగుతుంది.  మొగ్గ చుట్టూ మట్టి, బురద ఉండటంతో అదేదో రాయిలా కనబడుతుంది. వికసించేదాకా దీని ఉనికిని ఎవ్వరూ గుర్తించ లేరు. పొడవాటి స్తంభాకారంగా ఉండే స్పాడిక్స్, దాని చుట్టూ పుష్ప పత్రాలు రంగుల్లో కనిపిస్తాయి.  ఈ పుష్పం నుంచి వింత వాసన వస్తుంటుంది. ఈ వాసన పీల్చిన కీటకాలు అక్కడేదో మాంసం (ఆహారం) ఉందని భ్రమిస్తాయి. దీంతో గుడ్లు పెట్టుకోవడానికి కూడా అనుకూలమని ఈ పుష్పంపై వాలతాయి.  ఈ మోసపూరిత చర్య వల్ల ఈ మొక్క పరాగ సంపర్కానికి అనువైన పరిస్థితులు ఏర్పరచుకుంటుంది. ఈ ప్రత్యేక లక్షణాల వల్ల శాస్త్రవేత్తలనే కాకుండా పర్యాటకులను కూడా ఈ మొక్క విశేషంగా ఆకర్షిస్తున్నది.

Far to the west of Indonesia lies the large island of Sumatra, a land covered with dense rainforests, steep mountains and deep valleys. It was in one such remote valley that a group of tourists witnessed an extraordinary sight — a flower pushing its way up through the earth.

At first, they noticed only cracks forming in the soil. Curious, they returned the next day. The cracks had widened, and something shaped like a human brain was slowly rising from below. By the third day, this strange form had emerged even further. The tourists were astonished when they realised it was not a stone but a flower bud preparing to bloom.

Insects are tricked into thinking the scent comes from decaying flesh — a source of food or a safe place to lay eggs. Drawn by this smell, they land on the flower and in the process help with pollination.
