అది యు.కె లోని  ఓ అడవి ప్రాంతం. చలికాలం అవడంతో చాలా తొందరగానే చీకటి పడింది. ఇక ఇంటి దారి పట్టాలని ఫోటో గ్రాఫర్ సామ్ గేబీ దగ్గర్లోని జీప్ ఎక్కడానికి సిద్ధమవుతున్నప్పుడు చూశాడు ఆ దృశ్యాన్ని. 

 తనకు కొద్ది దూరంలోనే  మండుతున్న కాగడా లాంటిదేదో చటక్కున కనిపించి అంతలో కనుమరుగైంది. అతనిలో ఆసక్తి పెరిగింది. నిప్పులు చిమ్ముతూ కనిపించిన ఆకారం ఏమిటి!  ఇలా ఆలోచిస్తుండగానే మరోసారి నిప్పు కణికల్లా వెలుగులు చిమ్మినది ఏదో  ఆకారం. అక్కడే ..ఆ చెట్ల ప్రక్కనే నిలబడినట్లు అనిపించింది. దాని కళ్లు మిలమిలా మెరుస్తున్నాయి. అతనిలో భయం కంటే ఆసక్తి పెరిగింది.  ఎందుకంటే అప్పటికే తాను విన్నాడు, ఆ ప్రాంతంలో అప్పుడప్పుడు ఫైర్ ఫాక్స్ లు తిరుగుతుంటాయని.  ఇప్పుడు కనిపించి మాయమవుతున్నదని ఫైర్ ఫాక్స్ అని నిర్ధారించుకున్నాడు. 

    ఇక అప్పటి నుంచి ఫైర్ ఫాక్స్ కోసం ఆ ప్రాంతానికి తరచూ రావడం, వీలు చిక్కినప్పుడల్లా వాటిని ఫోటోల్లో బంధించడం అలవాటుగా మారింది.  నెమ్మదిగా ఓ ఫైర్ ఫాక్స్ ని మచ్చిక చేసుకోగలిగాడు.   నెమ్మదిగా ఫైర్ ఫాక్స్ జీవన శైలి, వాటి స్వభావం అతగానికి అర్థమైంది. 

“ఫైర్ ఫాక్స్” అంటారే గాని ఇది ప్రత్యేక జాతి నక్క కాదు. రెడ్ ఫాక్స్ సమూహం లోనిదే. కాకపోతే,  చర్మం యొక్క రంగులో మరింత ప్రత్యేకతను సంతరించుకుంది. ఎర్రటి మంటలా ఉంటుంది చర్మం.  శరీరం రంగుకు కారణమైన మెలినిన్ అనే రసాయనంలో వచ్చిన అరుదైన మార్పు  వల్ల ఈ ప్రత్యేకత కలిగింది.   ఇతర లక్షణాలు అన్నీ రెడ్ ఫాక్స్ లక్షణాలే.

వాస్తవానికి నక్క చాలా తెలివిగలది. అది బతకడం కోసం అనేక ఎత్తులు, జిత్తులు ఇట్టే నేర్చేసుకుంటుంది. వీటిలోని కన్నింగ్ నేచర్ గురించి మనం చాలా కథల్లో వినే ఉంటాము. తన అవసరాలను తీర్చుకోవడం కోసం నిముషాల్లో తమ వ్యూహాన్ని మార్చేయగలవు. ఈ విషయంలో రెడ్ ఫాక్స్ లు, అందునా ఈ ఫైర్ ఫాక్స్ లు మరీనూ. 

బతక నేర్చిన గుణం వీటిలో చాలా ఎక్కువ. మనుషుల్లో కూడా ఇలాంటి లక్షణం ఉన్న వారు మనకు కనబడుతూనే ఉంటారు. ఎంతటి గడ్డు పరిస్థితులు ఎదురైనా తప్పించుకోగలరు. అందుకే `వాడేకేం రా , వాడు బతకనేర్చిన వాడు' అనడం మనం తరచూ వింటూనే ఉంటాము.

• వేసే ప్రతి అడుగు ఆచితూచి వేస్తుంది. ప్రమాదాలు పొంచి ఉన్నాయో లేవో పసిగట్టే నేర్పు అబ్బింది.  ప్రతి పని ప్రారంభించే ముందు రాబోయే ప్రమాదాలను ముందుగానే గుర్తించాలన్న సందేశం ఉంది. 
• ఒక వేళ ఎదురుగా ప్రమాదకరమైన అడ్డంకి ఎదురైనా భయపడదు. ఓ క్షణం ఆలోచిస్తుంది. ఎదిరించడమా ? లేక తప్పించుకోవడమా ? అన్నది తృటిలో నిర్ణయించుకోగలదు. భయపడటం కంటే ఆలోచనతో ప్రమాదం నుంచి బయటపడవచ్చన్న సందేశం ఇందులో ఉంది.
