జీవితకాలంలో ఒక్క సారి మాత్రమే పుష్పించి ఆ తర్వాత కొద్దికాలానికే కృశించి నశించే  మొక్క కథ ఇది! 

  ఒక ప్రక్క అగ్నిపర్వతాలు వెదజల్లే  వేడి బూడిద ఆపైన అల్ట్రావైలెట్ కిరణాల తాకిడి, మరో వైపున రాత్రి పూట వీచే బలమైన చలిగాలులు తరచు నీటి ఎద్దడి … ఇన్ని ప్రతికూల పరిస్థితుల్లో కూడా దశాబ్దాల పాటు ఒంటరిగా జీవించే మొక్క ఇది.

  ఈ మొక్క పేరు Haleakala SilverSward .  వృక్షశాస్త్రం ప్రకారంగా చూస్తే ఇది Asteraceae కుటుంబానికి చెందినది.  వృక్షశాస్త్ర నామం : Argyroxiphium sandwicense (subsp. macrocephalum). 

అమెరికాకి నైరుతీ దిశగా ఉన్న Maui, Hawaii  దీవి లోని   Haleakala  అగ్నిపర్వత శిఖరాల్లో ఈ మొక్కలు తరచు కనబడతుంటాయి.  ఏడు వేల అడుగుల ఎత్తులో ప్రతికూల పరిస్థితుల్లో బతకడానికి అలవాటు పడిన మొక్కలివి.  మరెక్కడా సహజసిద్ధంగా పెరగవు. దీని ఆకులపై వెండి రంగులో మెరిసే నూగు ఉంటుంది. 

   Haleakala  ప్రాంతం ఆశ్చర్యకరమైన సూర్యోదయాన్ని తిలకించే చోటు కూడా.  అందుకే పర్యాటకులను విశేషంగా ఆకర్షిస్తుంటుంది ఈ ప్రాంతం. 

  సరే, ఈ మొక్క ఉనికిని  అది పుష్పించడానికి ముందు దాకా 

ఎవరూ ఎక్కువగా పట్టించుకోరు .  ఎత్తు కూడా తక్కువే, కానీ దాని నుంచి ఉన్నట్లుండి పొడుచుకు వచ్చే ఆరడుగుల పొడవాటి కాడపై వందలాది ఊదా రంగు పువ్వులు రాగానే పర్యాటకులను  ఈ మొక్క ఇట్టే ఆకర్షిస్తుంటుంది.  ఐతే, ఈ మొక్క ఇలా  పుష్పించడం కోసం దశాబ్దాల తరబడి ఎదురుచూస్తుంటుందని చాలా మందికి తెలియదు. పైగా ఈ మొక్క తన  జీవితకాలంలో ఒక్క సారి మాత్రమే పుష్పిస్తుంది. ఈ ఘడియ కోసం  ఒక్కో సారి ఐదు దశాబ్దాల పాటు ఓపిగ్గా ఎదురు చూడగలదు.
